'cause it's Ragtime...

Now...I was gonna do a whole post highlighting the funk that can be found on some kids T.V. soundtrack albums, but seen as most of them have already been documented on the world-wide-web at some point or another, I thought I'd just post this extreme oddity alone. We all know 'Fearless Freds Amazing Animal Band', 'Bang On A Drum', 'The Mickey Mouse March', etc...but little is talked about this, 'Motorists Are We' by Miss Sponge & Mr Jelly, from the BBC TV Series 'Ragtime'. Maybe it's because there's no open break as such, or maybe it's simply because it doesn't turn up very often (I've only ever come across this one copy in all my years of charity shop and bootsale shopping). Or, maybe, it's just that nobody really gives a shit! Well I love anything bizarre with a healthy dose of Funk, and this definitely has it. I know the heavy Welsh accent of Miss Sponge can be some what off putting, but get past that and there's a serious, and slightly, sinister groove which for novely value alone cannot be ignored. Arranged by Graham Walker, who is well know for some funky moments over his musical career, it amazes me how backing tracks like this are chosen for albums of this nature. Of course the rest of the L.P. is typical funtime kids music, and not really worthy of a second listen, but if you come across this record on your travels and have a spare 50p, pick it up...or look at it, laugh, and think about that stupid twat who featured it on his internet blog...
